Sinatra’s Spaghetti Recipe

Sinatra loved his pasta and Italian food just as much as his music. Sure, he loved Jack Daniels and women too, but at the end of the day, he knew that he could really could not survive without food.

Frank Sinatra was obviously Italian (and half Sicilian and please don’t ask what the difference is), so he knew what authentic Italian food tasted like.  Here is his first wife’s recipe above.  But when he got divorced, and married some “mericans” (non-Italian American women), he learned to fend for himself out in his new home of Hollywood and Palm Springs.

Here is a recipe what is so easy even he would make it.  He did attempt to with one bandaged hand in 1970 on Dina Shore’s TV show, but its easy to understand how it got botched, and when they cut for a commercial break they didn’t give you the rest of the ingredients.  But we have them here.  If you do a search you will see variations, one thing I can almost be certain of is that his mother did not use butter, nor did he. Some recipes call for half a stick I am not buying it.  A mere small pat of it maybe to emulsify the sauce and give it some sheen but certainly not a half of a stick of butter:

  • Spaghettini cooked in salted water (spaghettini is thinner than regular or thick spaghetti, which is usually used for meat sauces).
  • 1/4 Onion sliced in very very thin crescents
  • 3 Large Cloves of Garlic
  • Olive Oil
  • Fresh Chopped Basil (a few leaves)
  • Pinch of Dried Oregano
  • Salt & Pepper

It should not be hard to find on – it is actually amusing and you see he cut his hand before the show aired. But if you refer to that simple article above, you have the basic recipe every Italian is practically born with in their head.
