1754  French chemist Joseph-Louis Proust born. He extracted sugar from grapes, and proved it identical to sugar extracted from honey.

1774  John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) born. American pioneer and legend who planted apple seeds in the Ohio River valley area in the states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

1904  Writer Lafcadio Hearn dies, he wrote ‘La Cuisine Creole,’ the first Creole cookbook.

1953  Sugar rationing ends in Great Britain.

1964  The TV showGilligan’s Island premieres.

2008  Actor Paul Newman dies, he co-founded ‘Newman’s Own’ food company which donated all profits to charity.

2009  A bottle water ban goes into effect in the town of Bundanoon in New South Wales, Australia.
