1762  Sandwich first appears in print. Edward Gibbons Journal, entry on this day reads ‘I dined at the Cocoa Tree….That respectable body affords every evening a sight truly English. Twenty or thirty of the first men in the kingdom….supping at little tables….upon a bit of cold meat, or a Sandwich.’

1998  Nicholas Kurti dies, Hungarian born British physicist whose hobby was cooking and coined the term ‘molecular gastronomy’.

2005  New licensing laws in England and Wales allow more than 1,000 pubs, clubs and supermarkets are granted 24-hour licenses to sell alcohol.
