1534  German botanist Otto Brunfels dies. His work is considered to be a bridge between ancient and modern botany.

1553  Italian Botanist Prospero Alpini born. He is said to have introduced coffee and bananas to Europe.

1828  Cornelius Hoagland born, Co-founder of Royal Baking Powder Company in 1866.

1921  US President Harding signs the Willis Campell Act which prohibits doctors from prescribing alcohol, beer, liquor, etc.

1945  Wartime rationing ends in the United States

1953  American Chef Rick Bayless was born, best known for his love of Mexican Cuisine.

1977  The US requires warning labels on products containing Saccharin.
