Cinco de Mayo

1862  Cinco de Mayo: The Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. 100 years later it became a popular holiday in the United States to push sales of Mexican beer, spirits and foods.

1903  Culinary expert, foodie and author James Beard born.

1936  US Patent granted to Edward Ravenscroft for the first bottle with a screw cap.

1961  Jim Gardner and Leonard Rawl open the first franchised Hardee’s fast food in North Carolina.

1978  Ben & Jerry’s opens in a former Vermont gas station.  Their business grows to compete with Haagen-Dazs.

2008  Irv Robbins dies, co-founder, with Burt Baskin of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream.
