1742  Benjamin Franklin invents the Franklin Stove. He purposely did not patent it so that others could freely copy the design.

1793  American patent for a cast iron stove is issued in Pennsylvania.

1842  Carl Paul Gottfried Linde was born, German engineer who invented mechanical refrigeration.

1901  New Zealand annexes the Cook Islands.

1939  US President Franklin D. Roosevelt serves hot dogs to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England during their 1939 visit to the United States, it was their first time tasting this American invention.

1947  Sugar rationing due to World War II ends in the US.
