There is really great charm and warmth to small individually owned coffee shops. They flourished in the 1990s with the popularity of TV Sitcoms like Fraiser and Friends, but now they are not so easy to find due to corporate globalization and domination. Don’t get me wrong, I like the fact that when I see that Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts logo I know I am getting a consistent product that will suit my needs at that particular time, but I really enjoy a less corporate/rushed atmosphere of a small town coffee shop that always delivers.
Jola Coffee in North Caldwell is a warm, welcoming, friendly place. Joanne and Larry are the owners (hence the name JOLA). You will find no commuters rushing in and out for their caffeine to hurry off to work or whatever destination. These people take the time to explain to you the products on the menu, and even give you an unpretentious education on their blends and brands of coffee.
Their Almond Croissant is delicious, but they also have a variety of other treats including many that are gluten free and vegan. They might not be cheaper than the big corporate place we all know, but the quality is far superior. I can tell from the first sip of my espresso. And my wife is definitely a coffee aficionado so much more than I am.
