1778  Captain Cook discovers the Hawaiian Islands and names them the Sandwich Islands, after Lord Sandwich.

1818  George Palmer born, who introduced the first biscuit tins.

1907  John James McLaughlin of Ontario, Canada awarded a trademark for Canada Dry Ginger Ale.

1909  Quebec prohibits the sale of alcoholic candy sold in 30 stores in Montreal.

1943  Sliced bread banned in the US during World War II, to conserve metal from spare parts that might be needed.

1990 The first McDonald’s in Moscow opened.
