Fine & Rare NYC – Fine Food / Rare Spirits
Fine & Rare is a remarkable place for the finest spirits. Its by the same people of the Flatiron Room which has some of the best and widest selection of whiskey in Manhattan.
From the moment you walk in, you can tell this is either your greatest fantasy or your worst nightmare. A nightmare because you can’t possibly enjoy everything you see on the massive shelves of spirits that pad the walls and ceiling. I can’t even begin all the bottles I saw which I could have blown a month’s salary on, but just to name a few of my favorites I spotted were Michter’s 10 year, Hibiki 21 year, Ardbeg Uigeadail, Old Rip Van Winkle, and not just whiskey and whisky but many fine rums and cognac as well.
They offer a unique and extensive flights of whiskey and dozens of cocktails from classic to seasonal. On this visit, I did not have a chance to taste their food. It was a private event, and what hors d’oeuvre they had sent around were ok to good, but not enough to make an assessment. One thing they did bring around which is on their menu is Chipotle Turkey Meatballs with whiskey bbq sauce and fresh smoked ricotta. A bit spicy, and I love spicy, but the ricotta cools it off and the smoked ricotta keeps it paired perfectly with whiskey. One thing I really really loved were the mini latkes with Crème Fraîche and salmon roe caviar. When I return I would definitely be interested in the Scotch eggs, bone marrow and short ribs.
