Captain’s Grog

Tiki Triangle: Captain’s Grog

This recipe was taken from The Smuggler’s Cove Recipe Book.  Its a great book by the way.  I know everyone likes to buy the electronic version to store on their smartphone or tablet, but if you ever want an attractive, fun, informative, useful book sitting on your coffee table, this one is it.  I have both the iBook version and loved it so much I bought the hardcover edition.

This book has dozens of great, authentic, original cocktails from prohibition on, or since Tiki takeover of the cocktail scene.  This recipe is a variation of the Navy Grog, which was a favorite of Frank Sinatra, a confirmed bourbon lover. So that should tell you something. Its strong, flavorful and has the deep rich flavors a bourbon lover can appreciate.

  • 15 ml Lime juice, fresh
  • 15 ml Grapefruit, fresh
  • 15 ml Grade A Maple Syrup
  • 15 ml Flarenum
  • 15 ml Dry Curacao (regular curaçao works also if need be)
  • 20 ml black rum
  • 20 ml gold rum
  • 20 ml light rum
  • 3 Drops Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 3 Drops Pure Almond Extract

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker or mixer tin if you have a mixer.  Add 1 cup of crushed and whole ice cubes, shake for 30 seconds and/or mix for 5 seconds, strain into a double rocks glass with one large cube and garnish with mint sprigs.
