Old Forester Birthday Bourbon

Old Forester Birthday Bourbon

Spirit: Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey; Aged 12 years; 96 Proof; $90 Retail
Mashbill: 72% Corn, 18% Rye, 10% Malted Barley

Wow.  That is all I can really say. I am not going to get into all these tasting notes because right now I am just busy enjoying it for what it is, and it is delicious.  It is smooth, it is sweet, and it ranks up there with some of the best bourbons I’ve ever had.

I was lucky enough to get the last one off the shelf at a special tasting with a raffle to buy a Pappy Van Winkle.  I’ve had Pappy Van Winkle, and honestly, while they make good whiskey, this night, I walked away a real winner.  This stuff is hard to find, even if you have a relationship with a retailer.  I found it harder to get this than the Van Winkle line.  You can get it, and if you do, be very happy.

DISTILLERY PRESS RELEASE: The 2017 Birthday Bourbon barrel selection was drawn from a total of 120 12-year old barrels from different warehouses and floors all distilled on May 27, 2005. 93 barrels matured together on the 4th floor of G warehouse, while the remaining 27 barrels matured together on the 5th floor of K warehouse. Several barrels from both lots basked in the sun, highlighting the effects of maturation along an external wall in Old Forester’s heat cycled warehouses. The bottles hold the standard Old Forester mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% barley.”

For this year’s Birthday Bourbon, science plays an integral role in the product story. During the transfer of Bourbon from the holding tank to the bottling line, alcohol vapors were lost during bottling, causing the proof to drop. As a result, this year’s Birthday Bourbon will be presented at both 96 proof and 95.4 proof.” As far as where the different proofs will be distributed, the press release goes on to say, “Florida and Georgia will receive the 95.4 proof expression and remaining states will receive the 96 proof expression. Kentucky is the only state which will receive both expressions, with the 96 proof expression shipping first.

Personal Tasting Notes: Caramel, Toffee, Spice. I could smell the sweetness as I was pouring it before I even tasted it. Bottom line, this is rich, deep, bold, complex, sweet and just one of the most delicious bourbon’s I ever had.  Not a single bump in the road here, from smell to taste to swallow to finish.  Its times like this I wish for my youth so I can drink a lot more and not worry about a headache the next day.

If you cannot find this in your local liquor stores, order it out if it is not too expensive. Leave the Pappy, take the Birthday Bourbon.
