1492  Christopher Columbus’ first voyage from Spain to what he thought were the Indies but turned out to be the Americas.  Eventually he brought tomatoes back to Italy and it now defines most of its cuisine.

1941  Cook, author and home entertainer Martha Stewart born in New Jersey.

1954  Colette, (Sidonie Gabrielle) dies.  He was a  French novelist whose novels contained many detailed descriptions of food and a lot of recipes.
